🧠 Gap or gain? What I did 4am race day to manage my brain.

I woke up at 4 a.m. on race day, my stomach in knots.

It had been 3 years since my last triathlon, and my mind was flooded with all the things that could go wrong and what I hadn't done to prepare:

🏊‍♀️ The Swim – What if the lake was freezing? (I don't do cold well) What if I swallowed a wave of lake water?

🚵‍♀️ The Bike – This course was hilly… and I'd only trained on flat terrain. What if I left it all on the course and had nothing left for the run?

🏃‍♀️‍➡️ The Run – My hip issues meant I'd barely run 3 miles at a time all summer. Would the pain stop me from running?

⚡ Transitions – I hadn't practiced them at all.

Negativity bias was stealing my energy before the race even started.

So I asked myself the questions I would ask my clients:

❓ "What if you focused on the Gains more than the Gaps?"

❓"What are the facts?"

The facts were:

✅ I'd been swimming a mile weekly (the race was ¼ mile).

✅I was biking 16 miles weekly (the race was 14 miles).

✅I'd run intervals + 3-mile runs a few times (the race was 3.1 miles).

Once I started focusing more on the gains, my stomach knots softened. My self-doubt shifted and self-belief increased. I felt better. I felt ready!

My body was ready — I just needed my mind to catch up!

The result? I finished faster than I did 3 years ago and took 2nd place in my age group. 🏅 🎉

The lesson: Your preparation matters, but when self-doubt creeps in, shift your focus to the gains you've made, not the gaps.

That shift will change your results.

⁉️ Gap or gain? Which will you choose today?
