đ§ Gap or gain? What I did 4am race day to manage my brain.Â

I woke up at 4 a.m. on race day, my stomach in knots.
It had been 3 years since my last triathlon, and my mind was flooded with all the things that could go wrong and what I hadn't done to prepare:Â
đââď¸ The Swim â What if the lake was freezing? (I don't do cold well) What if I swallowed a wave of lake water?
đľââď¸ The Bike â This course was hilly⌠and I'd only trained on flat terrain. What if I left it all on the course and had nothing left for the run?Â
đââď¸ââĄď¸ The Run â My hip issues meant I'd barely run 3 miles at a time all summer. Would the pain stop me from running?Â
⥠Transitions â I hadn't practiced them at all.
Negativity bias was stealing my energy before the race even started.
So I asked myself the questions I would ask my clients:Â
â "What if you focused on the Gains more than the Gaps?"Â
â"What are the facts?"
Â
The facts were:
â I'd been swimming a mile weekly (the race was Âź mile).
â I was biking 16 miles weekly (the race was 14 miles).
â I'd run intervals + 3-mile runs a few times (the race was 3.1 miles).
Once I started focusing more on the gains, my stomach knots softened. My self-doubt shifted and self-belief increased. I felt better. I felt ready!
My body was ready â I just needed my mind to catch up!
The result? I finished faster than I did 3 years ago and took 2nd place in my age group. đ đÂ
The lesson:Â Your preparation matters, but when self-doubt creeps in, shift your focus to the gains you've made, not the gaps.
That shift will change your results.
