As a hockey parent, I've learned that tryouts are more than just a test for our kids—they test us parents. Our children look to us for guidance in moments of triumph and disappointment. And it's not easy for either party.
Whether they make the team they want or not, here's what I've shared with my kids:
✨ Your sport doesn't define you. You are so much more than hockey—or any sport.
✨You're not defined by a number or team. A, B, C—none of these letters can measure your heart, effort, and bravery.
✨As much as it may seem like this is happening to you, it's happening for you. Look at it with curiosity. What's here for you to learn? Maybe your new best friend is on this team...
✨You're not alone. Lean on your friends. Support each other.
✨Give yourself grace. It takes time to sort through the emotions, but trust this is part of a bigger, better plan for you.
✨Lead with character. Being a humble and kind teammate is what's most important.
✨You're exactly where you're meant to be. Embrace it. Use your energy to improve, not to resist.
My daughter Ana didn't make the team she wanted a few years ago. At first, she was upset. But instead of giving up, she channeled her inner fire and earned the nickname “Ana-mal.” She had her best season ever, scoring hat tricks in her first couple games! Her confidence soared because she didn't let disappointment stop her and she used her energy to improve.
What has your family learned from tryouts? Please share your story with me.
